Nose: Pepper spice, Sweet peat, Yummy Classic Lagavulin on the nose, Lovely smoke, Fresh fruits - pears- crisp green apples, Smoked Meats/ Salmon, some brine in the background, some sweet liquors and bbq meats combination going on in there with some light ash.
Palate: Oily, a little brine, sea salt, some spice, higher ABV makes itself known, punchy, BBQ meats, some pepper, lemon/citrus, a very nice mix of peat and smoke.
Finish: Long and spicy, BBQ meats, some light sweetness, mellow smoke, just wow.. some pepper spice in the end with some burning hay (in a good way).
Final Thoughts:
Diageo releases Lagavulin 12 as part of its annual special, limited edition release. Every year its a different bottle, different edition and a different taste. This is your favorite Lagavulin in a punchier , peatier, smokier, raw and younger format than the famous Lagavulin 16 yrs cousin that everyone knows and loves. You know by know that Lagavulin and I hold a very special bond (as do most scotch enthusiast’s out there). Lagavulin 12 being younger and higher ABV, brings out more of that core raw Lagavulin spirit forward for you to enjoy and Diageo does a pretty good job at it for the most part (Except the price). Off all the Lagavulin 12 yr limited editions i have had over the years, i always go back to the 2017 edition as being one of the best i can remember and cherish. Went through quite a few bottles the year this edition was released, i had to go through some hoops to re-acquire this old edition for my whisky club to try and this still does not disappoint after all these years. Grab a bottle if you can find one in auction or a bottle sitting out there in the wild and share this only with your closest near and dear one’s as this one cant be relaced anytime soon.
